A busted knee, a 102 fever, 90 miles to go in Humla, the remote Himalayas. Six years ago, I found myself at the crux. The toughest part of the climb, a moment that defines everything that comes after.
When we reached a shepherds hut at 14,000 feet, my knee began to swell as a fever set in. After a night of fitful sleep, I woke–changed. I was faced with the reality of my circumstance and was torn between what was easy and what was possible. I found myself at the crux. Would I turn back? Was I even capable of continuing the journey? In a single decision, I would define who I was and what I believe about myself.
Humla, Nepal is buried deep in the Himalayas. An untouched region where the smell of burning animal dung replaces the hum of electricity. Trekking into this remote part of the world requires careful planning, several flights, and a 100 mile journey on foot. With a heavy pack and many days of travel ahead, discomfort was part of the deal.
Stories worth telling are forged at the crux. By choosing to face the next 90 miles, I turned a fear of the unknown into fuel for my mental and physical capacity.
As humans, we face moments like these everyday. We choose courage over cowardice, love over hate, forgiveness over anger. Each crux is part of the cycle of our lives. Week after week, Sunday after Sunday, our lives begin to tell a story.
